Preliminary Steps

1.1 INITIALIZATION ACTIONS

Composition and first meeting of the teams In such interdisciplinary cooperation (between computer science and archeology) it is mandatory to fix the members of the teams in advance, and to set up “communication channels” among the teams, so as to avoid any future problems related to the flow of command/cooperation.
Goals
  • Composition and first meeting of the teams.
  • (Any) Formal project initialization actions.

Participating teams
CERETETH, AUTH, 13th Ephorate of P&C Antiquities.

Duration
1 month

Expected Results
1. Work teams.
2. Communication channels among teams.

1.2 MUSEOGRAPHIC AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL RECOGNITION

During this activity, a systematic analysis of the published work and other material, concerning the Volos Museum exhibits and of the related excavation sites. The analysis will exploit any available digital on-line libraries. Additionally, the group of archaeologists will record which archaeological material is already digitized, so as to communicate this information to the computer scientists.

Goals

  • The first goal of this activity is the valuation of the cultural heritage through bibliographic and museographic recognition.
  • A second goal is the identification of the material (exhibits, archaeological sites, or other) which has already been digitalized, so as to be taken into account in the later stage of design, development of the repository and during the data entry phase.

Participating teams
CERETETH, AUTH, 13th Ephorate of P&C Antiquities.

Duration
1 month

1.3 HARDWARE & SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS

Detailed definition of the functionalities of the Virtual Museum, and detailed specification of the required hardware-software. In such interdisciplinary cooperation (between computer science and archaeology) one of the most fundamental aspects for a successful cooperation is the formation of a deep mutual understanding among the participating teams. In other words, the archaeologists are expected to provide thorough descriptions of the storage and exhibition model for the information concerning the artefacts and sites which will be exhibited, for two main reasons: a) this is the fastest way for computer scientists to transform the requirements into hardware and software, and b) it is the only way to understand and circumvent any technological, administrative, or other kinds of limitations/constraints.

Goals

  • Detailed description of the functionality of the novel Virtual Museum type.
  • Detailed specifications for the needed hardware and software.

Participating teams
CERETETH, AUTH, 13th Ephorate of P&C Antiquities.

Duration
1 month

Expected Results
1. Detailed description of the required networking facilities.
2. Detailed description and an initial design of the database that will be developed in full functionality in later stages.
