Repository & Networking

The goal of the 2nd Activity is the development of the archaeological DataBase (repository) for the storage of the information which will support the Virtual Museum, and also the installation of the networking infrastructure/facilities, and the placement of the sensors – RFIDs (Radio-Frequency Identification tags).

2.1 DEVELOPMENT OF THE REPOSITORY

During this task the Development of the Archaeological Data Base (Repository) will take place:

  • Creation of the database schema.
  • Development of the relevant micro-applications, e.g.,
      • Forms for data entry by users – humans or other information sources (other databases).
      • Forms for data retrieval based on complex search criteria with archaeological semantics.

Goals
The goal of this task is the design and development of a fully operational database which will accommodate all the data, metadata and other kind of information required for the operation of the Virtual Museum. Two of the key features of this database are:
1. it will allow for continuous update with new material of added value, and
2. it can be accessed from within intranets.

Participating teams
CERETETH, AUTH, 13th Ephorate of P&C Antiquities.

Duration
2 months

Expected Results
The creation of a database with digitized information that will comprise the heart of the Virtual Museum and of the Virtual Tours.

2.2 DATA ENTRY IN THE REPOSITORY

Data entry in the Archaeological Data Base. All the information already digitized by the Archaeologists’ team will be entered into the repository. Additionally, a large volume of data which could not be digitized until now, due to lack of infrastructures, will be digitized and entered in the repository as well. A “linking” among the findings, the excavation sites where these findings were found, and of the research articles describing the findings and sites, will be documented using the facilities provided by the repository and then entered into the repository. The data which regard the findings will be enhanced with additional information, so as to achieve a more complete, from the anthropological point of view, description concerning their usage and goal of existence.

Goals
Recording of every piece of information that comprises a cultural treasure into a robust repository with multiple functionalities for complex retrieval and synthesis of results.

Participating teams
CERETETH, 13th Ephorate of P&C Antiquities.

Duration
2 months

2.3 WIRELESS NETWORK INSTALLATION AND RFIDs PLACEMENT

Wireless networking installation, and placement of the RFIDs (sensors) at exhibition display cases and/or at the excavation sites. Under the guidance of the archaeologists, the CERETETH team will install wireless network at the Museum Rooms, as well as at any other place of the excavation sites that is thought to be of some usefulness. Additionally, the sensors (RFIDs) will be placed at the exhibition display cases and at the excavation sites, and the teams will investigate whether the RFID can be safely placed at every finding, which, due to lack of space or for policy reasons, cannot be exhibited at the Museum’s Rooms, but it is stored in some other Museum’s depositories.

Goals
The goal of this task is the installation of the wireless networking and the placement of the necessary devices needed in the next activity of Virtual Wings development.

Participating teams
CERETETH, 13th Ephorate of P&C Antiquities.

Duration
2 months

Expected Results
The necessary wireless networking needed for the development of the Virtual Wings of the Virtual Museum.
